Lomnické sedlo (saddle) hides a lot of secrets
Mt Lomnický štít is definitely one of the biggest attractions in the High Tatras. Let’s be honest – the views from the summit are worth it. But did you know that there are also nice visitors in the saddle below in summer? Tatra marmot families!
They hibernate all winter long, for 6 months. Marmots need an insulation layer of one and a half to three metres of snow. But they look for their winter dens outside this piste, in Francúzska mulda (mogul) and down there in Lievikový kotol (basin) below Kartárikov žľab (glen). They move up to these grazing territories with ski pistes along the tourist trail only in early summer when there is enough to eat there.
