Tourists, dogs and bikes were counted in the Tatras
. Tuesday 15th August was a nice, sunny day, a bank holiday was celebrated in neighbouring Poland and in addition to tourists, people from the Tatra National Park set out for the hiking trails in the High Tatras to map the turnout in the alpine terrain. The tourist numbers published on tanap.sk revealed a lot about tourists, their goals and company.
Hrebienok reigns
Based on the published data, Hrebienok is the most visited locality in the High Tatras – with 5,416 tourists in the course of the day. It is easily accessible thanks to a funicular, a hiking trail as well as an asphalt road, and a sought-after starting point to make various hiking trips. The waterfalls of Studený potok (brook) and Rainer’s chalet are not far away, one can walk along the main tourist trail (so-called arterial trail = magistrála) to Skalnaté Pleso or Sliezsky dom. Last year, there were 3,999 tourists and 37 cyclists in Hrebienok on the monitoring day.
Popradské Pleso (tarn) with 4,784 tourists was ranked second and Skalnaté Pleso with 3,210 tourists was in third place.
Mt Rysy as a magnet for tourists
The summit of Mt Rysy, which is the highest peak of the Polish Tatras where hiking trails from Poland as well as from Slovakia run, became the more visited summit of two monitored ones. 1,976 tourists climbed there during the monitoring day, which is 788 more than last year. Mt Kriváň was climbed by 757 people on the same day.
The Tatras also for cyclists
The route between Tatranská Polianka and Sliezsky dom defended the title of the most popular cycling route in the High Tatras again – with 156 cyclists including 74 electric bikers. 126 cyclists set out for Popradské pleso, Tichá dolina (valley) welcomed 121 cyclists. In total, there were 935 cyclists in the Tatra National Park, which is 50 more than last year.

The alpine environment is popular also to make trips with four-legged friends. On the monitoring day, most dogs and their owners walked to the area of Popradské pleso, where 76 dogs were counted, which is the same number as last year. In total, there were 321 dogs in the Tatra National Park on that day. In the summer of 2022, it was 282 dogs.
