Mölltaler Gletscher is the only glacier in Carinthia, Austria. And despite that, Czech and Slovak are the most frequently heard languages there.
The ski season on the Mölltal glacier began on 10th October 2024.
Skiers could enjoy the piste that runs from below the summit of Mt Schareck at the altitude of 3,122 metres. Today, skiers are zipping down more pistes already and can choose what they prefer based on their mood and ambitions.
To be more specific, this Alpine resort offers pistes for beginners but also terrain for advanced skiers and freeriders – almost 18 kilometres of pistes and almost 7 kilometres of freeride terrain in total. After a friend of mine who comes from the Tatras visited the resort for the first time, he said:
It’s like skiing on six Skalnaté Pleso pistes at the same time. Amazing!”
friend from Tatras 🙂
The slopes copy the elegant lines of the Alpine mountains and are ideal to enjoy the best skiing adventures. The resort atmosphere is emphasised by small mountain chalets with red-white window shutters located on ski pistes. The biggest resort attractions include the Mölltaler Gletscher Express funicular, which can transport 220 passengers to the altitude of 2,234 metres within 8 minutes and surmounts an altitude difference of 1,012 metres on a more than 4.7-kilometre-long route.
The interchange station (i.e. the upper funicular station from where one can take a cable car to continue up the hill) offers a ski service facility, a rental and a big complex for skiing beginners in winter. What’s more, the kid’s club will organise skiing lessons for children from 4 years including dinner-time care.
Non-skiers can feast their eyes on the world of the mountains from the panoramic Eissee restaurant at the altitude of 2,800 metres and admire breathtaking scenery of 28 summits and mainly renowned sunsets from the restaurant terrace. And speaking of the restaurant – all lovers of breaded cutlets and potato chips but also vegetarians will be happy to see the menu. How about desserts? Apple strudel is a must-try delicacy! It tastes perfectly on the glacier. And so does coffee or Bombardino during a break between “portions” of powder snow and epic downhill rides.
By the way, in addition to lots of Slovaks, Czechs and Poles, one can meet several well-known world skiing personalities on the Mölltal glacier. National teams from Austria, Germany, Slovenia, Croatia, the Czech Republic and Slovakia have already trained there. And to prove that skiing personalities have always felt good on the glacier, there is a gallery of photos and messages from Mikaela Shiffrin, Ivica Kostelič, Tina Maze, Felix Neureuther, Marie Riesch and others in the EISSEE restaurant entrance hall. Is this inspiring enough?
Good to know …
