As young parents, we’re always on the lookout for new adventures and experiences for our family. So we decided to spend a day at Muttereralm. With our two children in tow, we set out to try the new attractions there. And we have to admit, it was a day full of fun and laughter.
Arrival and first impressions
We arrived by car and parked next to the cable car. The journey from Innsbruck took just 10 minutes, and only when we got there did we realise that we could have taken a bus or a tram, which operates from the city centre to the Muttereralmbahn station. The cable car ride itself was a little adventure. Our kids were thrilled, watching the bikers zooming down the trails in the bike park. They couldn’t wait to try out all the attractions we had been telling them about.
Attractions that the kids loved
Climbing ropes, swings and a stilt house
We continued to a new stilt house located right at the end of the marble run. It looks incredibly inviting and offers a great view of the entire Innsbruck valley. Here, the children can take a break, relax in the shade or explore new climbing ropes and swings. The climbing ropes offer different challenges, so our younger daughter and as well as the older son had a blast. We’re sure all kids will have a great time here too. The swings provided not only fun but also a chance to enjoy beautiful nature and stunning views.
Marble run
A new marble run, just a 10-minute walk from the upper cable car station, was our first stop. The short section is easy to complete even for small children in prams. Wooden marbles can be purchased at the start of the run for 2€ and taken home as a souvenir to remember a lovely family outing. Our kids couldn’t wait to set their marbles down the run. The construction of the track is really impressive, with lots of obstacles, jumps and bells that the marbles have to overcome. It was exciting to watch the kids discover their own paths for the marbles, race them and have a great time.
Photo point
A photo point by the lake was a unique highlight of the day, especially for us parents. Here, we took a beautiful family photo with the mountains in the background. The large 3D letters of Innsbruck provide many ideas for a great keepsake shot. And climbing frames and swings keep the little adventurers entertained. We highly recommend it.
Water playground
A few minutes’ walk from the stilt house near the upper cable car station, you’ll find another attraction – magical water. The path to the starting point is pram-friendly, making this an ideal spot for families with younger children. There’s a water playground that you’ll appreciate on hot days. Kids can splash around, build dams and enjoy the cool water. Since we visited Muttereralm in changing weather, we had an umbrella with us. It immediately became a source of endless fun under the waterfall. For us as a family, Zauberwasser is an absolute favourite among the trip tips.
Relaxation for parents
While the kids played with the water, we could relax on the deck chairs there and enjoy the sun. It was the perfect moment to unwind and watch the children play against the beautiful forest backdrop.
Other attractions at Muttereralm
- Adventure trail: Besides the main attractions, Muttereralm also offers an adventure trail running through the forest. It is ideal for an easy hike and includes many interesting stops where kids can climb, balance and test their skills. It was a great opportunity to explore nature while staying active.
- Almrundweg: For families who prefer a more leisurely pace, Almrundweg is a relaxing chance to explore the surroundings. The path is well-maintained and suitable for prams, making it ideal for families with small children. Along the way, there are many beautiful spots to rest and have a picnic, as well as charming pastures with local Tyrolean delicacies.
- Children’s playground: There’s another adventure playground at Muttereralm that kids will love. With various slides, climbing frames and sandpits, it offers everything a child’s heart desires. Parents can relax on surrounding benches and watch their children play.
Lunch in an experiential restaurant
After so much adventure and fun, we needed a boost. The experiential dining Muttereralm restaurant next to the upper cable car station offers a wide range of tasty dishes that pleased both the kids and us parents. The menu is varied and includes something for everyone. We chose a seasonal mushroom goulash with Semmelknödel (bread dumplings), while the kids enjoyed their favourite Wiener schnitzel. However, the kids’ menu has many other dishes to choose from.
The restaurant is very family-friendly and offers a relaxed, child-friendly atmosphere. We were able to fully enjoy the lunch menu and the wonderful view from the panoramic terrace while the kids played contentedly.
The trip with kids to Austria was perfect
Our day at Muttereralm was a complete success! The number of new attractions ensured that no one got bored, and both the kids and we parents had an unforgettable day.
