Embark on a winter hiking adventure in the Tatras
Winter hiking suggestions in the High Tatras
Although many hiking trails are closed in winter from 1st November to 31st May, there are still plenty of trails open all year round on the map. In the High Tatras, Hrebienok offers lovely family-friendly hiking and amusing sledging down to Starý Smokovec. If you’re up for more, continue to one of the chalets that are open year-round. In Veľká Studená dolina (valley), there’s Zbojnícka chalet, or a bit further east, Téry’s chalet in Malá Studená dolina (valley).
In addition to these two chalets, you can also head to Sliezsky dom (mountain hotel) from Tatranská Polianka or to Popradské pleso (tarn). While the peaks are inaccessible in winter, you can still enjoy the Slavkovský outlook spot above Starý Smokovec. For a longer hike, start in Starý Smokovec, continue to Zamkovský’s chalet and then to Skalnaté pleso. You can not only refuel there, but you’ll also get stunning views of the majestic Mt Lomnický štít and even take a cable car to the very top (2,634 m above sea level).
Winter hiking in the Liptov region
Besides the High Tatras, Liptov also offers plenty of winter adventures. One can hike in Žiarska dolina (valley) all year round, for instance, all the way to Mt Baranec (2,185 m). This one will test your physical and mental strength, as the exposed terrain can be quite windy. But if you make it, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views of the Low Tatras, the Western Tatras and even a part of the High Tatras.
If you’re not looking for such an adventure, there are other winter hiking options. In the Western Tatras, a comfortable hike runs from the mouth of Žiarska dolina (valley) to Žiarska chalet. In the Low Tatras, consider Mt Poludnica, Mt Chopok or Mt Ďumbier along a ridge. You can refresh and relax in a warm restaurant on Mt Chopok overlooking the magical winter landscape of Liptov. If you want a high-altitude view without a long hike, take the cable car from Jasná to Mt Chopok and it’s just a short walk to the summit from there.
Cross-country skiing in Liptov and the High Tatras
Both the Tatras and Liptov offer great cross-country skiing. Whether you prefer skating or classic, you’ll find plenty of trails. From west to east, there are several centres. In the Zadné vody area in Jasná, there are several trails that can be combined to create a 5km circuit. Liptovská Kokava has a long-standing tradition of cross-country skiing with nearly 10km of trails for both classic and skating. Cross-country skiing can be enjoyed also in Hybe and Východná together with beautiful views of Mt Kriváň. Čertovica is a classic destination, and thanks to its higher altitude, the snow lasts longer there. The trails are more challenging and technical, suitable for advanced cross-country skiers.
The cross-country skiing complex in Štrbské Pleso is great for everyone. Beginners can learn on the stadium loop, while advanced skiers can head out on trails around Slepé pleso (tarn) or towards Furkotská dolina (valley). Tatranská Lomnica also offers good cross-country skiing for beginners as well as advanced skiers. There are several well-marked loops to choose from. The advantage of the cross-country skiing centres in the Tatras, like Čertovica, is their higher altitude, which means the snow lasts longer and one can often ski even in spring.
