Visiting the Stubaier Gletscher ski resort is definitely worth it! Let’s take a look at what the resort offers and what activities can be done in the surrounding area.
Where is the Stubai glacier located?
The Stubaier Gletscher ski resort, with its Stubai glacier, is the largest glacier resort in Austria, located in the Stubaital Alpine valley in Tyrol. It’s only 45 km from Innsbruck. We spent 3 days/4 nights in this area and the goal was clear – to ski as much as possible. It’s 600 kilometres from Bratislava, but the journey was well worth it. The resort is surrounded by majestic Alpine peaks over 3,000 metres high, and we could see them from our accommodation establishment in the town of Fulpmes.
Getting to the resort
Free ski buses operate throughout the 35-kilometre-long Stubaital valley from the town of Schönberg to the lower stations of the ski lifts and cable cars. To get to the ice kingdom, you can either take the lower-located Eisgratbahn cable car or the higher-located Gamsgartenbahn cable car. Access by car is excellent, and parking is free. There are large car parks at both stations, which means you can ski down to your car at the end of the day. Both cable cars run to an altitude of 2,300 m above sea level to Mittelstation Fernau. That’s where the real skiing paradise begins.
Cheaper ski passes with Gopass
But first, don’t forget your ski passes. A 1-day ski pass costs around 63€, which isn’t cheap. However, with Gopass, you can buy ski passes online at better prices. Instead of purchasing them at the ticket office in the resort, just click a few times in the Gopass mobile app. The Gopass SKI Season Pass is not valid at this resort, though.
The resort is perfect for families
Are you skiing with your family? Children younger than 10 years can ski for free in the resort, which is a big advantage. For every adult ski pass purchased, you are entitled to one free children’s ski pass. You just need to collect the passes at the ticket office below.
This skiing kingdom has repeatedly been awarded as the best family ski resort. But it’s not just the free passes that make it special. There’s so much more that guarantees perfect family ski trips – plenty of wide, easy pistes, attractions for children and great services and facilities for families.
Ski pistes in the resort
The resort offers 65 kilometres of pistes. The largest portion is made up of easy blue pistes (23 km). There are 15 kilometres of red – intermediate pistes. The slopes are very wide, safe and the visibility is perfect there. We saw many families with children there. There’s also the Big Family Pistenbully fun zone for kids.
The resort offers only one black piste, but freeride and ski-touring enthusiasts will still be in for a treat, with an additional 23 kilometres of ski-touring and freeride trails. The resort also has a Snowpark with easy as well as more challenging jumps.
Options for non-skiers
The entire Stubai valley is a paradise for glacier climbing enthusiasts, as many icefalls form there in winter. But that’s not all – in the ski resort at the upper station of the Gamsgarten cable car, there’s a 20-metre-high ice climbing wall. Anybody can come and test their climbing skills for free, and beginner courses are held there. If you’re new to ice climbing, you can book a lesson with a mountain guide who will introduce you to the sport. For more details, please read the resort website. In addition, the resort is proud of a variety of winter hiking opportunities.
Endless views are most beautiful
We enjoyed skiing to the fullest. From the moment the resort opened until it closed. It was impossible to resist in such environment. For us, more experienced skiers, the slopes were more of a relaxing, enjoyable experience. But, of course, we also tried the freeride zones and the black piste. However, the surroundings were the greatest reward. We didn’t have clear skies, clouds and mist were hovering around the upper stations, but that’s what made it so beautiful. The magical views of the majestic 3,000-metre peaks of the Stubai Alps were breathtaking. We could even see as far as the Dolomites. In favourable conditions, you can visit the Top of Tyrol panoramic viewing platform.
Our tip for the end: After a full day of skiing, we visited the StuBay thermal park, where we perfectly relaxed in the pools and saunas.
