If you’re looking for a true mountain experience in the heart of the High Tatras, the Hrebienok Mountain Lodge is the perfect choice. It’s located above the upper station of the funicular running from Starý Smokovec and offers a unique combination of cosy accommodation, stunning views and direct access to some of the most beautiful hiking trails.
Accommodation at Hrebienok with an authentic mountain atmosphere
The Hrebienok Mountain Lodge radiates mountain tranquillity. After a day spent outdoors, you can relax in cosy rooms furnished in a simple yet comfortable style, which further emphasises the mountain experience. It’s an ideal place for hiking enthusiasts, skiers or anyone looking to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
Unlike traditional mountain chalets and huts, the Hrebienok Mountain Lodge offers the practical comfort of a private bathroom and toilet in each room, which is a real treat after a long day of hiking. You can stay in double, triple or quadruple rooms, which makes it a great option not only for couples but also for small groups of friends or families who prefer a bit more privacy compared to shared accommodations.

Staying at the Hrebienok Mountain Lodge means more than just a bed for the night. Fantastic benefits are included in the price – cable car tickets valid in the High Tatras and Jasná, as well as access to popular water parks – Tatralandia and Bešeňová.
Access and parking
The lodge is not accessible by car, which only adds to its mountain charm. Parking is available at the paid public car park near the lower station of the funicular in Starý Smokovec. From there, you can take the funicular, which runs regularly throughout the day. Once you arrive, it’s just a short walk to your accommodation.
Guest comfort services
On site, you’ll find additional services to add more comfort to your getaway – from simple refreshments and social areas to hiking advice. The lodge is also a great choice for smaller groups and school trips.

Where to go from Hrebienok?
Hrebienok is the starting point of many iconic hiking routes in the High Tatras. Here are a few of them:
1. Hrebienok – Rainer’s hut – Zamkovský’s chalet
An easy and popular trail, perfect for families with children. Along the way, you can stop at Rainer’s hut to have a traditional cup of tea and see a display of historic mountain load-bearing equipment.
2. Hrebienok – Obrovský vodopád (Giant waterfall) – Téry’s chalet
A slightly more demanding hike, but the views of the Giant waterfall and the chance to enjoy refreshments at Téry’s chalet in the heart of Malá Studená dolina (valley) make it worthwhile.

More challenging hikes
Hrebienok is a great starting point for several alpine hikes that offer breathtaking views and a truly alpine experience. Here are three proven routes for experienced hikers:
1. Hrebienok – Prielom (saddle) – Mt Východná Vysoká and back
This route runs through Malá Studená dolina (valley), past Téry’s chalet, follows with a steep ascent through the Prielom saddle and then up to Mt Východná Vysoká (2,428 m above sea level) – one of the most iconic crossings in the High Tatras. You will be rewarded with panoramic views of Mt Gerlachovský štít and the Mt Vysoká massif. The route is technically demanding but manageable as a full-day circular hike for experienced hikers.
Duration: approx. 9–10 hours
Difficulty: high
Highlight: final ascent to the summit of Mt Východná Vysoká via a rocky ridge

2. Hrebienok – Sedielko (saddle) – Javorová dolina (valley)
This hike runs through Malá Studená dolina (valley) up to Sedielko – the highest tourist pass in the Tatras (2,387 m above sea level). The descent is a more technical section leading into beautiful Javorová dolina (valley), one of the quieter areas of the Tatras. The best is to plan it as a one-way route and return by bus or car from Tatranská Javorina.
Duration: approx. 8–9 hours
Difficulty: high
Highlight: crossing between two valleys, less frequented route

3. Hrebienok – A-level via ferrata across Priečne sedlo (saddle) – Zbojnícka chalet – Hrebienok
This circular route combines classic hiking with a via ferrata section. It runs from Téry’s chalet over Priečne sedlo (saddle) (via ferrata equipment recommended – category A/B), and continues into Veľká Studená stolina (valley) and then past Zbojnícka chalet back to Hrebienok. A great adventure for more daring hikers who are comfortable with exposed terrain.
Duration: approx. 7–8 hours
Difficulty: high, technically demanding saddle
Highlight: via ferrata ascent with panoramic views and two mountain chalets on the route

Family fun
The area around Hrebienok is perfect for families. In summer, you can explore the Tatra Forest Trail with information boards. In winter, the Tatra Temple of Ice – a magical ice cathedral – is a must-see and a major attraction each year.
The interactive Kvantarium Light Gallery is a special feature located inside the Hrebienok Mountain Lodge – a small but fascinating light exhibition that’s great fun for both children and adults looking for a little break from mountain hikes.
The Hrebienok Mountain Lodge is a place where everyone can find something for themselves – active adventures, peaceful nature or family fun. Just hop on the funicular and let the Tatras enchant you from their heart.
