The project focused on the return of the shepherding tradition and traditional Wallachian sheep to Jasná continues.
A lot of new attractions are waiting for visitors who come to the biggest ski resort in Slovakia.
People can meet the sheep in the area of Priehyba on the southern side of Mt Chopok from Saturday 1st July to the end of the summer. The flock of 40 Wallachian sheep will be grazing the pistes under the supervision of shepherds and sturdy Pyrenean mountain dogs. The organisers have prepared some attractive innovations for the second project season.
The history of sheep farming
A replica of an original shepherd’s hut will be built in the area of Priehyba so that all visitors can see how the life at a sheep farm looked like and what tools shepherds used to process milk. We also want to continue to train our shepherd dogs because the grazing area is enclosed with an electric fence now, but we would like to let the sheep move freely on the pistes in future.

In addition, there are other new things that should make the locality more attractive this summer. “An educational trail will run from the upper cable car station to the sheep and will include original photo points related to the sheep farming tradition – a 2.5-metre-high traditional overtone flute, sheep sculptures of stone decorated by an artistic blacksmith or a giant milk mug. One more surprise is planned for children and is being made by a woodcarver currently. We would like to introduce it in the course of the summer,” added Jiří Trumpeš, the general manager of the Jasná resort.
“While last year, we wanted to launch the project successfully as it was not easy, this season, we would like to keep developing it. The plan is to revive the most important but also sustainable elements of the sheep farming tradition. We are returning to the roots that can work meaningfully also in 2023,“ added Peter Kompiš.
To get to the sheep farm and the sheep in Priehyba, visitors can take the new cable car that operates from Biela púť, was opened last winter and made the wheelchair-friendly transport route to the top of Mt Chopok complete.
